The Greater Aiken area is rich in health care facilities and services. The region is home to nine hospitals and more than 25,000 medical professionals providing some of the best health care services in the nation.
For example, Aiken’s residents have access to Aiken Regional Medical Centers (ARMC), which the Carolinas Center for Medical Excellence has ranked as South Carolina’s top hospital for treating heart attacks, heart failure and pneumonia. Healthinsight, a private, nonprofit organization based in Utah, ranks ARMC among the nation’s top hospitals for treating the above-mentioned diseases.
With more than 120 on-staff physicians covering 38 specialties, the 230-bed hospital is well equipped to care for your family’s health needs. A new cardiovascular floor, featuring 34 all-private rooms, opened in 2003, and the 15,000- square-foot Cancer Care Institute of Carolina, offering radiation and chemotherapy treatment and support services in one location, opened in 2004. A new emergency room and a consolidated Intensive Care Unit opened in 2005.
ARMC’s vast array of services ranges from a 24-hour emergency department to cardiopulmonary and respiratory services, Computerized Tomography Scanning to same-day outpatient surgery, dialysis treatments to pain management, and much more. A sleep disorders center, women’s center, diabetes and nutrition center, a behavioral health sciences center, plus the Cardiovascular Institute of Carolina and the Cancer Care Institute of Carolina, are among ARMC’s top-notch facilities.
Also serving the area is the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) system, a teaching- and research-based hospital, which is located a short distance away in Augusta, Ga. The MCG Medical Center complex forms the core of the MCG system’s facilities. The medical center includes a 483-bed adult hospital, an ambulatory care center with more than 80 outpatient clinics in one convenient location, a specialized care center housing a regional trauma center serving 13 counties, and a 149-bed children’s hospital. The MCG system also includes more than 90 satellite clinics.
Augusta, Georgia-based University Health Care System features a 581-bed, not-for-profit community hospital serving 25 counties in Georgia and South Carolina. The Health Care
System also includes two nursing facilities – the 100-bed Kentwood Nursing Facility, which includes 20 personal-care beds, and the 149- bed Westwood Nursing Facility, which includes 20 beds for Alzheimer’s patients.
University has won the National Research Corporation’s Consumer Choice Award eight years in a row. And in 2005, University was awarded the prestigious Magnet Designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, recognizing quality patient care and nursing excellence.
In addition to hospital and physician care, a comprehensive range of health care services can be found in Aiken County, including home health, physical therapy, occupational therapy, sports medicine, behavioral health and exercise programs to name a few. Special interest programs and support groups are also available, as well as educational programs.
Comprehensive care facilities, adult day services and assisted-living communities complement the many medical services available and support the diverse health care needs of area citizens.
